Join Suruchi Chandra, MD, an integrative psychiatrist, as she discusses holistic approaches for treating the persistent symptoms of Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections.
Lyme disease, a tick-borne infection that can involve multiple organ systems, is one of the fastest growing infectious diseases in the United States. After the initial infection, Lyme disease can be dormant for many years and then in the later stages involve the central nervous system. At this point, the infection can mimic a number of psychiatric illnesses, including anxiety disorders, mood disturbances, psychosis, and autism-like behaviors. Lyme disease can be further complicated by the presence of co-infections, which may include Bartonella, Babesia, and Ehrlichia.
Treatment for these infections in the chronic stage can be especially challenging and some patients continue to have persistent and debilitating symptoms despite the recommended course of antibiotic therapy. We will look at integrative and holistic approaches for treating the persistent symptoms of these infections, including dietary changes, herbal medicines, and nutritional supplements. We will also review Dr. William Lee Cowden’s integrative approach to chronic Lyme disease and other co-infections.
